ISLE of ARRAN / Dun Fionn...

This is our favourite walk and is a relatively easy 4-5 mile walk for reasonably fit people. It can be done from Brodick-Dun Fionn-Lamlash, but our preference is the reverse, Lamlash-Dun Fionn-Brodick. For one thing - it's the easier route! The other factor is that being Brodick based, it's always nice to be walking back towards home! The views from the top of Dun Fionn are absolutely spectacular and should not be missed. On a clear day, you will enjoy breathraking views of Lamlash, Lamlash Bay and Holy Isle to the south, sweeping view of the Ayrshire coast across the Firth of Clyde to the east, and the Cumbrie islands and Bute to the north with the highlands rising in the distance. Then perhaps, best of all, the soaring majesty of Goatfell across Brodick Bay with it's equally famed companion, the Sleeping Warrior to the west. If you have only time for one walk while in Arran, then this is the one!
This photo, taken from aboard the famous paddle steamer, Waverley, shows the prominent , elevated position of Dun Fionn [on left] at the head the Clauchland peninsula, seperating Brodick Bay to the north and Lamlash Bay to the south. First off, we take the short bus trip from Brodick to Lamlash, enjoying the spectacular views of Holy Isle and Lamlash Bay, as the bus descends the steep hill, past the golf course, into Lamlash.

We resist the urge to pop into The Pierhead Tavern...

looking back at Lamlash village...

as we head east...along the shore front

with awesome views of Holy Isle.

starting up the path to Dun Fionn

kinda steep!

looking back at great  views of Holy Isle...

and great views ahead of Goatfell.

the path can get a bit rough...with the ferns...chest high...

higher and higher...

don't slip! almost there...

Made it! Posing by the marker on top of this Iron Age hill fort...Dun Fionn.

sweeping views of the Holy Isle and Lamlash Bay.

Our good friend, Roger, a proud Yorkshireman, set the pace on this, and every walk, when he visits!

In the'summer season', two ferries sail the Ardrossan - Brodick route... here, the 'Saturn' [wee ferry] and the 'Caledonian Isles' [big ferry],  are about to pass halfway.

Heading down the north slope of Dun Fionn.

Some good news...it is all downhill from here...

The 'Caledonian Isles'...sailing into Brodick Bay...

Rest and be thankful! A well placed bench for the weary walker to enjoy the  outstanding views...

this downhill path leads through a dark spooky forest...

rolling hills and farms...

great views of Goatfell and castle from Corriegills
